To use a USB drive as the backup drive for Microsoft OneCare

12/04/2007 10:48:00 AM

Problem: To use a USB drive as the backup drive for “One Care”, it must be in NTFS format. Most USB drives come in Fat32 format, so you must make some changes. However, you can't simply "Format" the USB drive because the default format options are FAT and FAT32. In order to format the USB drive as NTFS, you must first make the following changes:

  1. Open Windows Explorer
  2. Highlight USB Drive
  3. Right Click "Properties"
  4. Click on "Hardware" tab
  5. Highlight the name of USB drive below if more than one drive is listed
  6. Click "Properties" button, then "Policies" tab.
  7. Click the radio button that says "Optimize for Performance"
  8. OK

The USB drive can now be formated as a NTFS drive and used with Windows OneCare backup.

  1. Open Windows Explorer
  2. find and highlight the USB drive
  3. Right Click "Format"
  4. select NTFS option.

After the format is complete, it will appear as one of the options in the Windows OneCare backup settings.

In OO 2.2 Calc, there’s a built-in function:

Go to the Insert menu / Sheet From File / select your text file.

Check the options to choose delimiters and column types, etc.

Or, you can copy text file, then "paste special" into Calc to get to the same menu.

How to Hide the "Design" tab in Homesite 4.0

11/12/2007 09:42:00 AM

Homesite 4.0 is my favorite editor. It's faster than Homesite 5.0 on older PCs and isn't bloated with features that I normally don't use.

However, there's a "Design Tab" included that's sometimes buggy and will cause your system to freeze if you accidentally click on it while you're editing with Homesite.

To disable 'Design' tab, click on Options / Settings... / Design - and check the "disable (hide) design box.

Insert a Blogger Search Box onto your web site

You can insert a (Google) blogger search box onto your blog or website. I'm not sure if it returns the same results as the blue blog search bar that you find at the top of many blogger blogs. However, this code for a blogger search box seems to work.

Perhaps, the "Web 2.0 Style Reflection" image trick is already obsolete. Most tutorials use Photoshop. However, here's a "Master the Web 2.0 Style Reflection" tutorial that uses Macromedia (Adobe) Fireworks.

The Techcrunch article, "Another Tool To Map Website Visitors" pointed to Maps.amung.us, a widget that allows website creators to see where their visitors are located. It's live and the maps update themselves on your site without having to reload the whole page.

Here's an example.
